“ In 1939, my father and I saw Robert Wadlow, ‘The Alton Giant,’ here on the corner of 19th and State Street. We were going shopping and Mr.Wadlow was standing out front with his father talking to a few men.  My father stopped and stood with them while I went in and shopped.  I came out and stood with them and listened.

 

Soon after, our neighbor across the street, Mrs. Dietrich, offered to drive us to his funeral, so we all went.” – Doris Olive Giffin Laboray
